FALL CLASS SCHEDULE starts Monday Sept

The Fall CLASS schedule will start Monday September 12th following Belt Promotion.

For your convenience, the majority of the class times has not changed. With our vast new workout space students will have more room than ever!

These are the following adjustments:
- Saturday classes have each been bumped to 15 minutes earlier
- We have opened up the Mon/Wed 6pm class to now include Ban Bu's (this is a great option for those wanting to attend the BBC class right before. Ban Bu belts can attend either the 6pm or the 6:45pm class)

FYI
- after the Summer Break we have a ton of openings in our MORNING LITTLE NINJA class. With so many of our Ninjas attending school this fall, it's a great class for any of our Pre-schoolers.

What are your KIDS LEARNING THIS SUMMER????

Join us for 5 days of action packed classes where they can learn new forms, have fun with friends and even have the chance to EARN A NEW BELT!
Each year classes fill quickly and spaces are only available on a first come first serve basis. Be sure to reserve your spot today :) And when you take advantage of our early bird specials, Kamps start as low as $149* each! For 20 hours of training with World Champion leaders, that can't be beat!
We still have students begging to learn the EXCLUSIVE WEAPONS form the Kampers learned last year!
This course will feature specific training on their ground and stand up game. Great for kids who are a little nervous to interact and awesome for those who are wanting to take their sparring to the next level!
Who doesn't love showing off their Kicks & tricks?? We will help each Kamper fine tune their abilities and work on those awesome karate kicks they see in the movies!

SPRING CALENDAR starts April 4th

We are so excited about our upcoming new space but in the meantime wanted to offer additional classes to help accomodate more students. These new class times will give your child more attention to work on their curriculum. Please check which of them works best for you.

CHANGES to NOTE:
JR. BEG & INT - we have added two new classes Mon & Wed at 3:15
this is a great class for kids who have early out and is a nice way to get your karate time in and still leave plenty of time for Homework and a little play time after school.

BAN BU + and TEEN/ADULT - Mon & Wed 6:45
We want to give the Ban Bu and Black Belts some more specific training and will now offer a class at 6:45 with the Teens & Adults. We would encourage any Ban Bu and aboves (Jr's and adults) to come to this class time.

TEEN ADULT BBC - Mon & Wed 7:30pm
For all of our BBC & Masters Teen / Adults we've added a more convenient class time following the Mon & Wed class. It's an extra 15 minutes after class so that you don't need to worry about coming earlier in the afternoon. You are also welcome to come both days rather than 1 x week for this class.

BLACK BELT CLASS - Tues & Thurs 7:30pm
We are excited to now offer a Black Belt only class on Tuesdays & Thursday to help all of our Ban Bu's and above prepare for their upcoming tests. (If you are an adult underbelt and this is the only night that works for you, please talk with Justus for options).

Congratulations

In February we held tryouts for our 2011 Team Justus Demonstration team. They had some big shoes to feel following the award winning performances of our 2010 team. We are continually impressed at the talent and caliber of the students we have at our Studio. This year was one of the best tryouts yet! This years team has great potential. As members of the demo team, they receive exciting performance and Leadership opportunities as they share their Martial Arts skills in the community. Watch for them at upcoming Belt Promotions, Tournaments, Parades and assemblies. Some of our demo team members will even have a chance to compete at the Disneyland Tournament of Champions and march in Disney’s Main Street Parade. Way to go newest members! We look forward to seeing you show us what you’ve got!

SUPER GRANDS

Congratulations Justus
on your
7th World Title!!

The day after Christmas Head Instructor Justus Lawrence took off for the 20th Annual Super Grands International Karate Tournament in Sacramento, California.

Justus was thrilled to compete and watch the top Forms, Weapons and Sparring competitors from the 2010 NBL and NASKA karate tournament leagues!

(this is his final fight)

After numerous fights, Justus went into the Middle Weight Sparring finals undefeated and fought his toughest competitor of the season Josh May on the big stage. It was a tough fight which made winning all the better!

Super Grands is a tournament held once a year in different parts of the US. It is the crowning event of the NBL and NASKA Karate Tournaments and is an invitation only event. Competitors come from Europe, Mexico, Canada and America and are the top winners from various Regional and National Tournaments.
He was the oldest competitor to win a title in the 18 - 34 division this year. Justus earned his first title when he was 20 years old and has won his other Sparring titles on and off through the years (family life and a pretty cool Karate studio has made attendance sporadic).

Ban Bu Test...

Promotions...with a special guest...Master Aaron "Ace" Reis!!

We held another ban bu camp this morning and awarded a few new belts. Please take a few minutes to give these students a high-five for their hard work. Students were tested on a physical portion (including a run, pull-ups, sit-ups, push-ups), a written test, an essay, basics, kata, self-defence, showtime kicks, and weapons forms. All performed well...you should be proud of yourselves! You guys are amazing...and the hard work really does pay off. I will post more pictures soon...so come back to check those out...

Promoter's Championship Qualifying Tournament

Our Lindon STORM/SWAT team headed out to Green River, Wyoming this weekend to represent Team Justus at the Promoter's Champtionship Qualifying Tournament...We had about 15 people compete with representation from the Lindon, Orem, American Fork, and West Jordan schools. We were also fortunate to be able to compete next to Justus Lawrence and Jeff Vincent. We had a great time and enjoyed spending more time together. Board Breaking Event!!

In case you didn't know...BLK Lindon offers Birthday parties for your kids...imagine this...no planning (after choosing a date and time), no buying invitations (we supply them), no set-up, no clean-up, no kids running through your house. We offer birthday parties that challenge your guests with karate basics, games, kicks, punches, etc and we include clean-up. You show up and enjoy the party!! Team Justus Try-outs....Spring 2010

We held Team Try-outs on Friday 12 March 2010. We had about 30 people try-out...we worked hard and had lots of fun along the way! Enjoy the excerpts from our experience... I love our kids and enjoy working with them. The teams are a ton of hard work, but you can see that we have lots of fun!

Belt Promotions

So we were able to hold Belt Promotions @ Ascend Fitness on Thursday 04 March 2010. We had around 150 participate and receive their new belts. Among that number were 3 of special interest...

Now watch for Shayna...she is working towards her Black Belt and could test in April. We also had 3 mom and dad volunteers at the Bake Sale table. The bake sales raised money for the STORM team so that we can represent Team Justus at tournaments, half-time shows, parades, and equipment. Thanks for your support at this bake sale and look for future opportunities to support your awesome team.

Team Justus also received recognition for their performance during the 2009-2010 season. Although we will be holding try-outs on Friday (TOMORROW), this team will remember that we earned a 1st place for SWAT and 2nd place for STORM/Elite. Congrats again! (A photo of the trophy will be posted asap).

If you didn't participate in our promotions...make it a point to attend the next one coming up this summer. They are fun and the energy is incredible.

Team Try-outs...

We are holding Team Try-outs on Friday March 12, 2010. Although this is the official try-out day, you will be assessed the entire week so make sure that you are bringing your black belt excellence everyday you walk through the doors to our Studio. This year we have participated in many activities including a Flash half-time show, 2 tournaments, 3 parades, 2 belt promotions, etc. We are excited to invite new members to our team.

There are 3 teams for which you can try-out...Elite, STORM, and SWAT. Depending on your skill level you may be invited to try out for one of our teams. More information will be given in class. Come and join a winning team....TEAM JUSTUS!!

Ban Bu Test!!

So today we had a 3.5 hour Ban Bu Test at our Lindon Studio. We began the process with 42 candidates and ended up testing 22 students. The test was very difficult and really verified that our students knew their basics, kata, self-defense, physical portion, sparring, weapons, and showtime kicks. The students were tired but were rewarded with a new belt or additional knowledge for which to approach the next test. Flash Game Awesomeness!!

So our team performed an amazing half-time demonstration during the Flash Game!! It was amazing and everyone did very well. We were a few men down (Justus with a sprain, Sandie with lung issue, Harley with strep, etc) but the team did really, really well. We are very proud of them and request that people send images to Sandie so that I can create a more complete picture. We didn't get video of the STORM team...but your images will help. Our Swat team enjoyed a 1st place victory over American Fork and 11 other schools, while our STORM team enjoyed a 2nd place victory only losing to AF...but we are already putting the spring demo together so that we bring home that trophy!!

Many thanks go to Katrina for lending us Justus for so many hours...to get us ready for this awesome event! And many thanks to Justus for being willing to help us shine. Lindon Black Belts were not just good enough to promote, but we cleaned house during the tournie with many medals coming from the newest black belts.

Achieving the level of Black Belt is something that very few are ever able to claim! Over 50 Black Belts from 15 different schools through out Utah were candidates at this test. It takes countless hours of training and huge amounts of dedication, discpline, focus and respect!! We were especially proud to have (3) students achieve the rank of 3rd degree Black Belt (no other school in the system had so many test). They are each such fantastic examples of Leadership and Black Belt Excellence.
We would like to highlight each of our Black Belts:

CHRIS ALLMAN- Chris is an extremely talented martial artist. He always exhibits such grace and skill with his forms and self defense. He also is quite acrobatic and it is always a pleasure to watch him do his thing!

JEFF ALLAN - Jeff just recently left for a LDS mission and was unable to attend the test but we are sure you have seen Jeff around the studio. You probably have even taken numerous classes from him. Jeff is a wonderful young man and has been an excellent member of our Leadership team. We are so proud of the example he is at karate and in life! We miss you Jeff!

MARTIN TINOCO- We are sure many of you have seen Martin at demo's and at the karate school. He is a very talented martial artist! It is always a joy to watch him perform.

MIMI TINOCO- Mimi is not only a talented martial artist but also a well loved leader. She started as an extremely shy young student and has developed into one of our teachers that every little ninja loves. But don't let that nice-ness fool you, she's got a mean axe kick and is one of our top Sparring competitors.

SANDIE WATERS- We are so lucky to have been joined by Dr. Sandie Waters. Sandie moved down over the last year to teach courses at UVU (she came from Utah State and transferred from the Logan school). She is inspiring to not only our students but also woman in the martial arts. She is the first adult woman we have had to achieve a 2nd degree black belt from our studio. We are grateful to the great things she contributes to our studio!

BRANDON HANSEN- Brandon is a very impressive 11 year old and our youngest student to test for Black Belt during this promotion! He's a fierce competitor but an even nicer kid. He's a great example to his younger brother who is in the little ninja program and also to his Dad who just received his brown belt.

CHIEKO HOKI - We were especially excited to have Chieko Hoki as Lindon's very first Black Belt. Chieko and her family started at the Lindon Studio when we first opened and she was the first Lindon student to achieve the rank of Black Belt. We look forward to when her mother, sister and brother can join her as black belts!

LEE STEVENS- Lee was one of the first students who followed us when the Lindon studio opened. He has been one of our most consistent and dedicated adult black belts. He works wonderfully with our Teens & Adults and brings years of martial arts experience. His attention to detail in forms and self defense helps to remind us to appreciate all aspects of skill development. We are proud to have him as part of the studio!

Be sure to give them a big high five when you see them at the studio! And we can't wait for when YOU achieve your black belt too!!
Black Belt Jackets are something that every student testing from the Lindon school receive when they achieve Black Belt. This is something that is earned and you can only receive from the Lindon Studio! Looking good Black Belts!

With over 400 competitors, this was quite the tournament. Competitors competed in Forms, Self Defense, Sparring and Weapons. We were so proud of all our students! We know that this can be a little nerve wracking but all the hard work and dedication certainly pays off! So we began August with another awesome Parade!! We were able to perform as a SWAT and STORM team with Justus in the lead. This was our last parade for the season and hope that you had the chance to come and see us in action! If you would like your student (or yourself for that matter) to be a part of a fun, energetic, dynamic, and great team then just let us (front desk) know and we will direct you to the time and place for the tryouts! Welcome to Green River, Wyoming....we were given the opportunity to perform/participate at a Promoter's Championship Qualifier. We were proudly represented by: Lindsay, Mimi, Chieko, and Martin. This Tournament was a qualifier for the Disney Martial Arts Festival in Orlando, Florida on October 16-18, 2009. Lindsay and Mimi were both invited to compete in Orlando in the fall and represent BLK-Lindon!! Lindsay plans to make the journey and show how we do things in Lindon...Justified!!

Spring BLK Interschool Tournament (May 1, 2009)

Our April was filled with practices for the SWAT, STORM, and ELITE teams. We put in many, many hours and finally were able to show off our skills at the Spring BLK Interschool Tournament on May 1, 2009 at Murray High School. Our teams did very well and the Elite team even went on to compete at Saturdays finals against American Fork coming in 2nd place. We did very well and look forward to our Fall Tournie! SPRING TRAINING

The spring is a great time to take your training to an entirely new level. The concept of springing into action may conjure thoughts of mental activity, but by putting the correct spring in your step, you’ll find you increase your physical ability as well. Physical activity is the key to health and prosperity, and the results are not only evident in your physical appearance. The more active you are, the healthier you will be mentally, spiritually and, of course, physically.
The pouncing speed of a mountain lion should come to mind when you think of explosive movement. Can you be that quick as a human? The answer is absolutely—but it takes two things: the right perspective and the correct training. Many instructors are teaching students daily and training their muscle memory to be as quick as a mountain cat. As a martial artist, you should be consistent in your training and if you are, then your results are limitless.
Now is the time to refocus on your goals, and start training a bit harder, so you can achieve the results you want. Take this time to develop a regular outdoor routine that will improve your martial arts abilities. Walk; run; perform wind sprints, kata or forms outside; and go to the beach to run on the sand or do your kicks. Meditate at the park, or meet a friend and workout. This will add to your motivation, and eliminate any potential monotony.
All of these activities will certainly enhance your martial arts skills, and possibly even improve your speed and agility, so you can be ready to spring into action. Explosive movements are developed through practice and repetition. Speed and agility are all components of hard work and practice, so you can be all that you can be. Put a little spring in your step, your training, and your life.

What is a bully? A bully is someone who uses force or the threat of violence to coerce another into action or non-action. A bully abuses others physically, mentally, or emotionally. They come in all ages, races, and genders and from all walks of life. Manipulation is the way of the bully.

How can karate help us defeat bullies without fighting?

- First, karate makes us feel confident. We know that if a confrontation does come to blows, we have a good chance of winning or escaping. We have been trained to know what a fight is like and we are less afraid of it.

- Second, we see the good in all people. We realize that even bullies are humans with needs, desires, and frailties, just as we are. We are able to see through enemy's eyes. This deflates the power of the bully in our mind.

- Third, if we build upon the confidence principle, we are able to generate more creative options. Our problem solving skills are strengthened in both a mental and physical way.

- Fourth, karate helps us to see our own strengths and weaknesses. Knowing yourself helps you make better decisions.

- Fifth, and most importantly, we look inside at our own behavior. Are we behaving in a way that attracts bullies or allows them to dominate us? Even worse, are we being a bully in any way to anyone else?

If you are being bullied or if you have acted as a bully, talk to your karate instructor. He or she can give you specific advice for your situation. Remember that as students of Bobby Lawrence Karate, you are expected to hold a high standard and to set an example of Black Belt Excellence!

For all the Twilight fans out there, we thought you would enjoy a little trivia about one of the stars. Taylor Lautner who plays Jacob in the best selling movie, started as a karate champion!! That's right!
Lautner began studying karate at the age of six in Michigan. By the following year, he began winning tournaments. He was soon invited to train with seven-time world karate champion Mike Chat and, when he was eight, he was asked to represent his country in the twelve years and under division in the World Karate Association where he proved himself by becoming the Junior World Forms and Weapons champion, winning three gold medals.He continued to flourish in the martial arts circuit; in 2003, at only eleven years old, he was ranked number one in the world for NASKA's Black Belt Open Forms, Musical Weapons, Traditional Weapons and Traditional Forms and, by the age of twelve, he won Junior World Championships.

As an actor, the show that first propelled him to stardom is one you may have seen: the Adventures of Sharkboy and Lava Girl.

Bobby Lawrence Karate TOURNAMENT Fall 2008

Wow, we are so proud of all the students who participated! There has never been a school as young as ours (we haven't even hit our 2 year mark yet) place so high and we couldn't be more excited. It really showcases what great talent we have at our Studio!
The day started out early with the Demo team competition. Our very young SWAT team did an impressive job with the debut of their very own Star Wars demo. All but one member has ever been a demo team member but you never would have guessed it with and exciting 2nd place! This great little team really pulled together :)

They were then followed by our extremely talented STORM team. The Storm team has been asked to participate in numerous half time shows at various BYU and UVU sporting events, along with school assemblies and BLK Lindon celebrations. They definitely fulfill their role of Special Team Of Role Models. They looked so sharp, crisp, clean and so stinkin' acrobatic! They were up first and did a great job getting things going. I don't even know if they realize how good they looked!

After this the tournament began starting with the adorable Little Ninjas then cruising upwards all the way to Black Belt. This tournament had an Olympics theme and we were proud to see our students, fight off the nerves and perform in front of hundreds of spectators. You could see all the hard work show as they did their various forms, self defense, weapons and sparring events.
Thank you students for your hardwork. It was a joy to watch you! And thank you parents for all the love and support.

Isn't that a great looking bunch?!!? We are so proud of the 9 Black Belt Candidates who ALL passed the State Black Belt Test held at Willow Middle School in Lehi Friday night.

There were hundreds of friends and family there to cheer on over 70 Black Belt Candidates! All the candidates participated in tests at a school and regional level in order to qualify to test at the State Test in front of all the Head of Schools and Special Guests, along with Master Lawrence.
They had a strenuous physical fitness test, that included a 1-2 mile run, sit ups, pull ups and push ups all within a 30 minute time limit. After this they went through numerous hours of testing on their Forms, Self Defense techniques, Kicks & tricks and overall attitude and skill level. For all the candidates this can be a grueling, intense experience. But after a culmination of years of dedication, commitment and follow through (many of the candidates have been involved with Bobby Lawrence Karate for at least 5-10 years!) they reaped the reward of that hard work.
We are so proud of our students!! They excelled in all categories and blew the physical fitness portion out of the water. We were proud to see the way the Bobby Lawrence Karate Lindon Students stood out from the crowd with impressives kicks, tricks and precision.
We would also like to point out that one of our Leadership teachers Sammy Allan had the highest total points at the Regional exam. This is an impressive feat considering all the talented candidates who were present! Way to go Sammy!!

Not everybody makes it to Black Belt but we know that the dedication and commitment that each of our new black belts put into this will benefit them in all aspects of their life!

JUSTUS COMPETE NATIONALS 2008

Many of you haven't had a chance to see Justus compete on a National or International level, so we thought it would be fun to start sharing some of his fights and footage here.
He went the Compete Nationals tournament in Ontario, California. He took:
1st in Light Weight Continuous Sparring and
1st in Sparring
During the runoffs he received an injury that threw him out for overall finals. But all in all, Justus had a good time and felt great about being able to compete.

This is one of Justus's fight at the Golden Gate Nationals in San Francisco. It is one of my favorites every year! Some of the best fighters in the nation come to compete and it is so cool to watch. We were lucky enough to watch Justus's uncle Mark and his brother Dallas compete also.

1st place - Continuous Sparring
2nd place - Team Sparring

(this is when all the winners of the separate sparring divisions from feather weight to Super Heavy and in between, compete until there is one man left standing).
